The most disturbing problem in the Dunbar Watershed is Litter, or "PIG DROPPINGS".

I doubt there is a Dunbar fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, biker or rock-climber that hasn't felt the disgust and hurt of finding our precious place marred with dumped cars, appliances, household trash, and worse.

Consequently, many of us spend many hours cleaning up after these slobs.  Some take part in the cleanups sponsored by Dunbar Sportsman's Club and Chestnut Ridge Trout Unlimited. Some of us even make a determined effort to personally clean up the pig droppings; a truly disgusting task.  The trouble is, when you come back next week, there is a new load of Pig Crap.

Some people assume that the Game Commission or township should keep the area clean, but  neither the Game Commission nor Dunbar Township can be expected to continually clean up after these slobs.  They have many other responsibilities and do not have the manpower to constantly  patrol the area so as to protect it from such abuse.

Waterway Officers, Game Wardens and State Police have all been frustrated in their attempts to prosecute these criminals.  They have been rebuffed at the magistrates, because they couldn't prove that the people they were prosecuting dropped the litter. They had to resign to the specious argument that someone else could have picked up the trash from the scofflaws home and hauled it to the dumping site, without the knowledge of the accused.  Its a bunch of baloney, but that is the current situation.

Then, during this springs TU sponsored cleanup, an idea hit us.  There is only one publicly accessible access point for motor vehicles large enough to haul the large trash items.  If a car, refrigerator, mattress, couch or other large piece of trash is to be dumped along Betty Knocks road, it has to be hauled past the Game Commission Shed! We concluded that a motion activated video camera could easily monitor the entrance and record a video record of vehicle entering and leaving Betty Knocks.  If the cameras record a truck containing garbage, entering the road and later record the same truck, without garbage, leaving, that would constitute physical evidence of a crime being committed and would likely increase the chance of successful prosecution.

We will post the area with several prominent signs so that everyone that is able to read will know that they will be photographed in the Betty Knocks area.  This will likely discourage criminal activity, before it starts.  Criminals do not want to be photographed!  It is hoped that the cameras will not only reduce our dumping, litter and vandalism problems, but also have a significant impact on other illegal activities in the area.

The Administrator for Gamelands #51 has indicated a willingness to support and man the project.  The amount of money we gather will determine the number of cameras and the quality of system that we are able to put in place.  Please consider making a donation to the "Help Catch A Litter Pig!" fund.  We have established an easy method for you to donate through Paypal.  Just click on the button below and fill in the forms.
